Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends gathered Sunday at the Keene Senior Center to celebrate the 100th birthday of Mrs. Silvia Vazquez.
Mrs. Vazquez was born Feb. 11, 1912, in Patillas, Puerto Rico, the youngest of three children of Miguel Vazquez and Alejandrina Vega Vazquez. As a little girl, she loved nature and liked to visit rivers and fields, play with animals in the fields and go to the beach.
She learned to sew and became a high seamstress, making fancy dresses and wedding gowns for lavish weddings. In her free time, she liked to embroider, grow flowers and go for long walks. She enjoyed helping anyone who needed help.
She and her first husband had two children, Aida and Isail Flores. Seven years after the death of her first husband, she married Domingo Vazquez on Feb. 24, 1945. They had six children: Sadot, Monica, Domingo, Evangelina, Juan and Migdalia. They also raised a nephew, Rafael Solas.
In 1958, Mrs. Vazquez and Domingo were baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Mrs. Vazquez became an avid reader of the Bible and spent many hours reading it.
She was a housewife and enjoyed singing and learned numerous hymns that she continues to sing and hum today.
She loved to travel and has lived in California, Florida, Boston and New York and has lived in Keene 15 years.
Her goal has been to raise her children to know God and remain in the Adventist Church.
